A throwback to a massacre(a 17-year old me has seen)

November 23, 2009, I just came home from a long walk with better thoughts in mind. Thoughts of  peace and freedom. Things that I came to think of as I've seen the little children playing and running along. The happiness in their faces with the gift of freewill and their freedom of expression were enough to fill my heart with hope of a better nation.

Tired but inspired, I rushed to the living room for a rest only to find out upon opening the television a deteriorating truth. A news was being broadcast showing how a person hungry for power could end hopes and dreams of many people, people who are just fighting for their rights and enjoying their freedom, people who represent peace and justice in our country. They who risk their lives to present truth to their countrymen. Responsible individuals who take chances to pursue careers big enough to help more people in their community.

These are the people who were inhumanly and ruthlessly murdered by a bunch of barbaric armed men that were said to be a private army of a political family. Bodies were found buried deep in the soil of their own motherland, Maguindanao. Blood of their fellowmen scattered everywhere, covering the ground. A vehicle used for digging owned by the government, was found. All these filthy things unlawfully done, only to stop a candidacy. What a horrible and disgusting act to do to your fellow countrymen whom you share the same God! What a dishonorable deed of a member the government had.

More than forty innocent lives were swallowed and taken away by a glutton hungry for money and power. More than forty families suffering and mourning for the lost of a loved one. More than hundreds disappointed and lost hope of peace. More than thousands lost faith in the government and in justice. More and more dreams of freedom ceased, and the press' liberty to present truth obstructed.

I am one of those young people  who had dreams of a responsible and free journalism, ambitions of being a good-willed politician, and any other career to help my land, all shattered. Fear crept up to our vulnerable young minds, corrupting our definition of a democratic republic and a good future. It is all because we have witnessed our homeland and our fellow citizens in this alarming condition, revealing a dull reality that wealth, power and much ambition could be dreadful.

This is my plead to them who think they are supreme. Please
take this dilemma seriously and show your people and the youth that you care for them. Show us that we could still rise from this mess and make us believe in great things again. Stop being oblivious, acting innocently and coming clean. Cease those who are blameworthy and convict them. Break off from promising small, nonsense goodies. What we need is a strong leader to repress this big deal on a criminal and teroristic action suspectedly led by your so-called allies. In case you don't know the purpose of your position, at least have shame. Do right as a person and honor your name.

PS: This is about the Maguindanao Massacre during the Noynoy Aquino administration. I wrote this article November 23, 2009. I was 17 years old and in my first year in college. Yes, almost 10 years ago, and in that young mind was presented an ugly truth about my country and our justice system. I was young and didn't know what to do, with no one to tell my feelings and opinions to, so I grabbed my pen and notebook and started writing my thoughts. I felt a very strong rage for the evildoers that I needed to let it out, at least through writing. It has been almost a decade and to my disappointment, the suspects have yet been convicted. I am now hopeful because I finally got the strong leader I wanted back then. Fingers crossed!
